NCAA Baskteball Odds: Maryland at No 15 Alabama
Thursday, November 17, 2011
Frank Martin
The Mark Turgeon era at Maryland Terrapins got off to a winning start on Sunday, as the school played its first game without Gary Williams on the sideline since 1989. Turgeon, who guided the Terrapins past North Carolina-Wilmington, faces a much bigger test to get to his second win.
Maryland will travel to San Juan on Thursday and serve as the visitor in a matchup with No. 15 Alabama Crimson Tide in the Puerto Rico Tip-off. The Crimson Tide have looked every bit like a top team in rolling through their first two games with a nice mix of veterans like JaMychal Green and Tony Mitchell and a handful of promising freshmen.
The Terrapins waved goodbye not only to coach Williams but star forward Jordan Williams after last season. Turgeon is left with just 10 scholarship players and six walk-ons as he attempts to rebuild the program.

The Crimson Tide have opened as 7.5-point favorites on SBG Global Sportsbook’s Live NCAA Basketball Odds.
Maryland Terrapins (1-0): Turgeon will lean heavily on sophomore guard Terrell Stoglin, who led the way with 22 points in the win over UNC Wilmington. Turgeon had hoped to have Pe’Shon Howard starting alongside Stoglin in the backcourt but the sophomore suffered a broken foot last month and will miss 10-12 weeks. In his place steps freshman Nick Faust, who decided to honor his commitment after coach Williams left. Faust scored seven points in his debut.
Alabama Crimson Tide (2-0): The Crimson Tide missed out on a trip to the NCAA Tournament last season despite a 12-4 record in the SEC. A weak non-conference slate was partially to blame, so this season coach Anthony Grant’s team will face a host of strong non-conference foes over the next seven weeks. They certainly looked up to the challenge against mid-major power Oakland, which knocked off SEC member Tennessee in the NCAA Tournament last season. Green led with 18 points and highly-touted freshman Trevor Lacey chipped in 10 in a 74-57 win.
1.
Maryland won the Puerto Rico Shootout
in 1998 - the last time it played a tournament on the island.
2. Green is the only senior on Alabama’s roster and averaged 12.6
points over the summer as a member of Team USA.
3. Turgeon
joined the Terrapins after taking Texas A&M to four straight NCAA
Tournaments.
